Yorketown is a town and a place in the Australian state of South Australia. It is located on the southern part of the Yorke Peninsula. Yorketown is about 91 kilometers (56 miles) west of Adelaide, the state capital. It is also about 70 kilometers (43 miles) south of Maitland, which is the main town for the local council.
History of Yorketown
Yorketown started as a private area of land in 1872. It was officially named Yorketown on November 16, 1995. The boundaries for the area were set on May 27, 1999. The Narungga people, who are the original inhabitants of the Yorke Peninsula, call this area Garrdinya.
Education in Yorketown
Yorketown Area School teaches students from their first year (Reception) all the way to their final year (Year 12). The school first opened in 1878 at a place called Weaners Flat. This spot is now where the town's playground is located. Since 1976, the school has been at its current location. In 2017, it joined with Edithburgh State School.
Local Media and Newspapers
Yorketown has a history with local newspapers. The first newspaper was The Southern Yorke's Peninsula Pioneer. It started on January 21, 1898. Ben L. Wilkinson owned and started this newspaper. His brother Richard also helped him.
After a few months, on March 25, 1898, the newspaper changed its name to The Pioneer. Later, in June 1970, it became part of the Yorke Peninsula Country Times.
For thirty years, there was another newspaper in town. It was called The Southern Yorke's Peninsula Clarion. It ran from February 1, 1902, to May 31, 1902. Then it changed its name to The Clarion and was published until May 21, 1931.
