Stanton Airfield (IATA: SYN, ICAO: KSYN, FAA LID: SYN) is a public airport located about one nautical mile (which is about 1.85 kilometers) east of the main part of Stanton, Minnesota. It is in Goodhue County, Minnesota, in the state of Minnesota, United States. This airport is privately owned by a group called Stanton Sport Aviation, Inc., but it is open for public use.
How Stanton Airfield Started
The airport, originally known as Carleton Airport, first opened in 1942. It was started when Carleton College bought a farm to create an airport. The main goal was to train pilots for World War II.
In 1944, the college rented the airport to a company called Triangle Aviation. This company was run by Malcolm and Margaret Manuel. They eventually bought the airport in 1955.
Later, in 1990, a new group called Stanton Sport Aviation was formed. This group bought the airport to keep it running. Because of its important history, Stanton Airfield was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. This means it's recognized as a special historical site.
