What's in Stanton?
Rivers and Lakes
Two creeks, Prairie Creek and the Little Cannon River, flow right through Stanton. The larger Cannon River and a lake called Lake Byllesby are also close by.
Stanton Airfield
Stanton is home to Stanton Airfield, a special airport with two grass runways. These runways are even cleared of snow in the winter! This airport is popular with people who enjoy sport aviation. You will often see gliders, classic airplanes, and planes used for Sport Pilot activities here. The airport used to be called Carleton Airport because of its connection to Carleton College.
Stanton Airfield is also where the Minnesota Soaring Club is based. This is the biggest soaring club in the upper Midwest. More than 25 gliders are kept at Stanton Airfield. Soaring, which is flying gliders without an engine, mostly happens on weekends from mid-April through November.
Even though it is a small airport, it was used by U.S. president Bill Clinton in 2000. He arrived by helicopter to give a speech at Carleton College.
Stanton Airfield was recognized as a historic site in November 2004. It has been used continuously for flight training since April 1942. During World War II, it helped train pilots. Stanton Airfield also has a Link Trainer, which was one of the very first flight simulators. It was used to train pilots during World War II as well.
Past Post Office
A post office used to operate in Stanton. However, it closed in the 1970s because of cuts to the federal budget.
