Discovering Stateline's Past
Stateline has a long and interesting history. It was first settled way back in the 1850s.
Early Names and Hotels
Before it was called Stateline, this area had other names. It was known as Laphams for a while. This name honored William W. Lapham. He opened a hotel here in the 1850s, welcoming travelers. Later, between 1930 and 1955, it was called Lakeside. After that, it officially became Stateline.
The Pony Express and Old Roads
Imagine a time before cars and planes! Around 1861, the famous pony express route passed right through Stateline. Brave riders carried mail on horseback, making quick stops between places like Friday's Station and Yanks.
Later, in 1916, Stateline was also on the Lincoln Highway. This was one of the very first roads that stretched across the entire United States!
A Post Office and a Border Mystery
A post office opened in Stateline in 1901. This meant people could send and receive mail right in their community.
For many years, there was a bit of a puzzle about exactly where the border between California and Nevada was in this area. This was called an interstate border dispute. It was like two neighbors trying to figure out where their property line was!
In 1980, the highest court in the United States, the US Supreme Court, made a decision. They ruled that the community of Stateline in Nevada was actually a little bit further east than people thought. Because of this, the California part of Stateline officially became part of South Lake Tahoe.
Today, the border is clearly marked by special Federal Survey Monuments. These markers were placed in 1893 by the US CGS. It's against the law to move or damage these important markers.
