Slhanay is a big, rounded rock mountain near the town of Squamish, in British Columbia, Canada. It's made of a type of rock called granite. Even though Slhanay is quite impressive, it's often seen next to the even bigger Stawamus Chief. The Chief is another huge granite mountain right next to Slhanay.

Discovering Slhanay Mountain

Slhanay is a special mountain with a rich history. It stands tall in the beautiful landscape of British Columbia. The mountain is known as Slhanay in the language of the Skwxwu7mesh people, who are the First Nations people of this area.

What is Slhanay?

Slhanay is a giant rock formation. It looks like a huge, smooth dome. This type of mountain is called a granite dome. It's formed from very old, hard rock. Slhanay is 665 meters (about 2,182 feet) tall. It's a part of the Garibaldi Ranges mountain chain.

A New Name for an Old Mountain

For a long time, this mountain had a different name. However, that name was not respectful to Indigenous people. It was important to change it. In 2009, after talking with the local First Nations, the mountain was officially renamed Slhanay. This new name honors the traditions and language of the Skwxwu7mesh people.

Exploring Slhanay's Trails

Slhanay is located inside the Stawamus Chief Provincial Park. There is a hiking trail that leads to the top of Slhanay. You can find this trail from the main path that goes up the Stawamus Chief.

Hiking to the Summit

The trail to Slhanay's summit is not always easy. It can be rugged and less maintained than other paths. Because of this, not many people hike all the way to the very top. If you like a challenge, this trail offers a quieter adventure.

Rock Climbing Adventures

While the summit is less visited, the steep rock faces on the west side of Slhanay are very popular. These walls are perfect for rock climbers. Climbers can reach these exciting climbing spots from a nearby road called Mamquam Forest Service Road.
