Steele is a city in North Dakota, United States. It is also the main town, or county seat, of Kidder County. In 2020, about 665 people lived there.

Steele's History

Steele was planned out in 1878 by a person named Wilbur F. Steele, and the city was named after him. The town began to grow quickly after the railroad reached this area. A post office has been open in Steele since 1880. The main building for Kidder County was built in 1883.

Steele has a type of weather called a humid continental climate. This means it has warm to hot summers and very cold winters. This kind of climate is common in the Great Plains region.

Record Temperatures in Steele

On July 6, 1936, Steele experienced the hottest temperature ever recorded in North Dakota. It reached an amazing 121 °F (49.4 °C) (49.4 °C). This happened during a very hot period called the 1936 North American heat wave. This temperature was the highest ever recorded so far north in North America for a long time. It was only beaten in 2021 by a tiny bit in Canada.

Summers in Steele are usually warm, with temperatures often reaching around 83 °F (28.3 °C) (28.3 °C). However, it can get hotter, with about 17 to 18 days each summer reaching over 90 °F (32.2 °C) (32.2 °C). Winters are very cold, with January nights averaging around 2 °F (−16.7 °C) (-16.7 °C).
