Stella Meghie is a talented Canadian film director and screenwriter. She is well-known for her feature films like Jean of the Joneses (2016), Everything, Everything (2017), The Weekend (2018), and The Photograph (2020). Stella Meghie has also directed episodes for popular TV shows such as Grown-ish, Insecure, and First Wives Club.
For her very first movie, Jean of the Joneses, Stella Meghie was nominated for a special award called Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. She has also received nominations from the Canadian Screen Awards and NAACP Image Awards, which celebrate achievements in film and television.

Early Life and Education
Stella Meghie was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were immigrants from Jamaica. She studied writing at the University of Waterloo. After that, she worked in New York City as a public relations agent in the fashion world.
In 2007, she decided to change her career path. She went back to school to study screenwriting at the University of Westminster in London. This helped her learn how to write scripts for movies.
Stella Meghie's Career in Film
Starting with Independent Films
In 2016, Stella Meghie released her first full-length movie, an independent comedy-drama called Jean of the Joneses. This film was shown for the first time at the SXSW Film Festival, a big event for new movies. The movie was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. It also received two nominations at the 5th Canadian Screen Awards in 2017. Stella Meghie herself was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for her writing.
Directing Studio Movies
After her first independent film, Stella Meghie started working on bigger studio movies. She directed the romantic film Everything, Everything in 2017. This movie was based on a very popular book. It starred Amandla Stenberg and Nick Robinson. The film was a huge success, earning $61 million worldwide from a budget of $10 million.
Returning to Independent Projects
Stella Meghie then went back to making independent films. Her movie The Weekend premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. This independent film was made very quickly, filmed in less than two weeks. Stella Meghie had written the script for it years before.
Directing The Photograph
In 2020, Stella Meghie directed her fourth feature film, The Photograph. The idea for this movie came from her own grandmother's story. Her grandmother reconnected with a daughter she had not seen in almost thirty years. The film starred Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield. It received mostly good reviews and earned $20 million.
Other Exciting Projects
Stella Meghie was originally going to direct a movie about the famous singer Whitney Houston, called Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody. While Kasi Lemmons ended up directing it, Stella Meghie was still an executive producer for the film.
She is also an executive producer for Tiana, a spin-off series from the Disney movie The Princess and the Frog. She was first hired to write and direct it, but Joyce Sherri took over those roles by October 2023.
In February 2023, it was announced that Stella Meghie would direct several episodes of the Disney+ series Wonder Man. This show is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
