Stephen Decatur Carpenter was an American military officer from Maine. He was born on May 21, 1818, and died on December 31, 1862. He served in the U.S. Army for many years. He was part of several important conflicts during his time.

Studying at West Point

Stephen Carpenter went to the United States Military Academy. This famous school is often called West Point. He started there on July 1, 1836. He studied to become an officer and graduated on July 1, 1840.

Serving in the American West

After graduating, Stephen Carpenter served in several conflicts. He was part of the Second Seminole War from 1840 to 1841. He also served in the War with Mexico from 1846 to 1847.

From 1848 to 1861, he worked on the frontier in Texas. He was even wounded in a small fight with the Comanches. On August 20, 1855, he helped set up Fort Lancaster in western Texas. This fort protected an important road. He was also the first commander of Fort Stockton. He stayed there until December 1860.

The Civil War and His Final Battle

When the American Civil War began, Stephen Carpenter continued his service. He worked at military bases in Florida and Indiana. He also fought in battles in Tennessee and Mississippi. He was part of the Army of the Ohio.

Stephen Decatur Carpenter was killed in action on December 31, 1862. This happened during the Battle of Stones River. This battle is also known as the Battle of Murfreesboro. It took place in Tennessee.
