Besides football, Stephen was also a fantastic track and field athlete. He ran for his high school and later for Georgia Tech. In high school, he broke the state record for the long jump. He jumped 7.84 meters, which is super far! This jump was even better than a record held by Christian Taylor, who later became a champion. At Georgia Tech's Pro Day, Stephen impressed NFL scouts even more. He showed he was good at catching passes and running routes, which are specific paths players run. Many thought he was one of the best wide receivers available in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Playing for the New York Jets
The New York Jets picked Stephen in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. They even traded with another team to move up and get him. On May 3, 2012, Stephen signed a four-year contract with the Jets.
He became a starting receiver for the team. Stephen played his first professional game on September 9, 2012. In that game, he caught five passes for 84 yards and scored two touchdowns! He had a good start, even though he was feeling a bit sick. Later that year, he got a knee injury and had to stop playing for the season. He finished his first year with 252 yards and three touchdowns.
In 2013, his second year, Stephen played in twelve games. He caught 24 passes for 342 yards and scored one touchdown. This touchdown came in a game where he had his best performance, catching passes for 108 yards. Unfortunately, he got another knee injury in December 2013, which ended his season early. The Jets later released him in August 2014.
Time with the Carolina Panthers
After leaving the Jets, Stephen joined the Carolina Panthers on their practice squad. A practice squad is where players train with the team but aren't on the main roster. In August 2015, he suffered a serious knee injury (a torn ACL) and was placed on injured reserve.
In February 2016, the Panthers played in Super Bowl 50, the championship game of the NFL. The Panthers lost to the Denver Broncos in that game. Stephen was waived by the Panthers in August 2016.
Other Teams and Later Career
On May 11, 2017, Stephen signed with the Toronto Argonauts, a team in the Canadian Football League.
Later, on August 6, 2018, Stephen signed with the Atlanta Legends. This team was part of a new league called the Alliance of American Football. However, he did not make the final team roster for them.
