Starting Out in Baseball

Stephen Tarpley went to Gilbert High School in Gilbert, Arizona. In 2011, the Cleveland Indians picked him in the eighth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft. However, he decided not to sign with them. Instead, he went to the University of Southern California (USC) to play college baseball for the Trojans.

After one year at USC, he moved to Scottsdale Community College. In 2013, during his only year at Scottsdale, he had a record of 3 wins and 2 losses. His ERA was 2.35 in 16 games, where he started 15 times.

Playing for the Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles chose Tarpley in the third round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. He signed with the Orioles and received a $525,000 signing bonus. In 2013, he played for the Gulf Coast League Orioles. He had 0 wins and 1 loss with a 2.14 ERA in seven starts.

Time with the Pittsburgh Pirates
