Stewartstown's Early Days: A Look at Its History
People started settling in the Stewartstown area around 1750. At that time, both Maryland and Pennsylvania claimed this part of southern York County. The argument over the border was finally settled in 1767. This happened when the Mason–Dixon Line was surveyed, creating a clear boundary.
How Stewartstown Grew and Got Its Name
By 1777, a main road connected York and Baltimore. Today, Stewartstown's main street follows part of this old road. Around 1812, a group of farmers decided to create a town in Hopewell Township.
The first buildings included houses, a workshop for making furniture and wheels, a store, and a tavern. Anthony Stewart owned the workshop. He also served as the village clerk, and his shop became the main meeting place for the community.
The village was first called Meadstown, named after Benedict Meads, who owned the tavern and store. Later, it became known as Mechanicsburg. This was because many skilled workers, or "tradesmen," lived there.
In 1828, the town got its own post office. Anthony Stewart was chosen as the first postmaster. However, there was already another town in Pennsylvania named Mechanicsburg. So, postal officials named the community "Guilford." Thanks to Anthony Stewart and Judge Adam Ebaugh, the Post Office Department changed the town's name to "Stewartstown" on March 24, 1832.
