Stoco Lake is a beautiful lake located in Tweed, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. It is part of the larger Lake Ontario drainage basin. This means all the water from Stoco Lake eventually flows into Lake Ontario.

About Stoco Lake

Stoco Lake is a medium-sized lake. It is about 5.4 kilometers (3.4 miles) long. The lake is also about 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) wide. It sits at an elevation of about 138 meters (453 feet) above sea level.

Islands and Bays

Stoco Lake has two main islands that have names. They are called Butternut Island and Grant Island. There is also a special area called Cosy Cove. This is a bay located on the northeast side of the lake.

How Water Flows Through Stoco Lake

Water is always moving in and out of Stoco Lake.

  • Inflows: The main river that brings water into Stoco Lake is the Moira River. It flows in from the northwest side. Other rivers that feed the lake include the Clare River from the east. Sulphide Creek also flows into Cosy Cove in the northeast.
  • Outflows: The water leaves Stoco Lake through the Moira River as well. It flows out through two different paths. One path is called the eastern channel, which is still known as the Moira River. The other path is called the Western Channel. These two channels go around a small piece of land called Sugar Island.
  • Journey to Lake Ontario: After leaving Stoco Lake, the Moira River continues its journey. It eventually flows into the Bay of Quinte. The Bay of Quinte is a part of Lake Ontario, near the city of Belleville.

Towns Around the Lake

There are three main communities located along the shores of Stoco Lake:

  • Tweed: The village of Tweed is found where the Moira River flows into the lake from the northwest.
  • Cosy Cove: This community is located on the bay called Cosy Cove. It is also where Sulphide Creek flows into the lake.
  • Stoco: The community of Stoco is situated where the Moira River begins to flow out of the lake through its eastern channel.
