The Stone County Courthouse is a historic building in Wiggins, Mississippi. It was built between 1917 and 1918. This building is where the main offices for Stone County, Mississippi are located, and it's where important county decisions are made. In 1996, it was named a Mississippi Landmark, which means it's a special historical place in Mississippi.

History of the Courthouse

Stone County was created by the Mississippi Legislature (the group that makes laws for Mississippi) in 1916. One of the first things the new county's Board of Supervisors (a group of people who manage the county) did was to hire a company to build the courthouse.

The Standard Construction Company from Meridian, Mississippi built the courthouse. It was finished in March 1918. The building cost about $29,515 back then, which would be a lot more money today!

The courthouse has two floors. The first floor had offices for county workers. The second floor was used as the courtroom, where legal cases were heard. Important county jobs like the sheriff (who helps keep the peace) and clerks (who handle official records) had their offices on the first floor. The courthouse was used all through the 1900s. Over time, parts were added to the first floor on both ends of the building.

By the year 2000, the courthouse needed to be fixed up and made more modern. It received special money from grants in 2002 and 2003 to help with the repairs. These grants were called the Community Heritage Preservation Grant and the Save America's Treasures grant. The upgrades included adding an elevator, a special court for young people, and internet access. The renovation of the building was finished in September 2004 and cost about $2.4 million.

Around the Courthouse

The original county jail was built just south of the courthouse. After it was no longer used as a jail in the late 1900s, it was fixed up to hold other county offices.

There are also two memorials on the courthouse grounds. One memorial honors people from Stone County who died while serving in major wars. These include World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the Global War on Terrorism. The second memorial is a special tribute to people from Mississippi who received the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery in the U.S. military.
