Stones Corner has an interesting past! Long ago, this area was a low-lying, wet place called Burnett's Swamp. It was often flooded by Norman Creek.

How Stones Corner Got Its Name

The name "Stones Corner" comes from a man named James Stone. In 1875, he bought a piece of land shaped like a triangle, right where Logan Road and Old Cleveland Road meet. He wanted to open a hotel there, but he couldn't get the special permission (a licence) he needed. So, instead, he started making and selling ginger beer. People began to call the area "Stone's Corner" because of his business, and eventually, it became the official name of the suburb.

Important Dates in History

  • 1913: A new Catholic church was opened in Stones Corner by Archbishop James Duhig.
  • 1931: A church group from Annerley tried to start a new branch in Stones Corner, but it didn't work out and closed after a few years.
  • 1950: The Stones Corner Library first opened its doors. It was updated in 1996 to make it even better.
  • 1975: For a while, Stones Corner was actually part of the nearby suburb of Greenslopes.
  • 2017: Stones Corner officially became its own suburb again in November.
