Stuart Island is a special place in British Columbia, Canada. It's one of the beautiful Discovery Islands, located between Vancouver Island and the main coast of British Columbia. What makes Stuart Island unique is that it's mostly owned by private individuals. This means you won't find a public ferry service to get there. It sits near the entrance of Bute Inlet, next to the larger Sonora Island.

Where Did the Name Come From?
Stuart Island, along with Bute Inlet, was named after John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. He was an important person in British history. John Stuart served as the Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1762 to 1763.
What Can You Find on Stuart Island?
This island is mainly home to fancy fishing lodges and very large private properties. Most people who visit Stuart Island arrive by float plane or helicopter.
Fishing and Adventure Lodges
Nanook Lodge is the only fishing and adventure lodge on Stuart Island that is open to the public. It even has daily seaplane flights from Seattle for visitors.
Who Owns Land on Stuart Island?
Several well-known business people own property on Stuart Island.
- Dennis Washington: He is a businessman from Montana. He owns a company called Seaspan Marine Corporation. Mr. Washington has built a 9-hole golf course on his property. This golf course was carved right out of the island's granite rock!
- Dave Ritchie: He is a businessman from Vancouver.
- Kris Mailman: He is the owner and CEO of Seymour Pacific Developments and Broadstreet Properties.
Private Airstrip
Stuart Island has a private airstrip that is paved. It is about 2,100 feet long. This airstrip is not shown on public aviation maps or in the Canada Flight Supplement. However, the Big Bay Water Aerodrome, which is for seaplanes, does appear in the Water Aerodrome Supplement.
