History
Studio 100 started in 1996. It was founded by three friends: Gert Verhulst, Danny Verbiest, and Hans Bourlon. They had worked together for seven years on a popular show called Samson & Gert. Gert and Danny also starred in this show.
After Samson & Gert, they created a new series called Kabouter Plop. Both shows became very successful. In 1999, Studio 100 grew even more. They made their first movie, The Gnome Treasure. They also created a musical version of Cinderella. Around this time, Studio 100 opened its own theme park.
In 2002, Studio 100 bought the popular girl group K3. This helped them offer even more entertainment.
Growing Internationally
In 2005, Danny Verbiest retired from Samson & Gert and sold his shares in the company. Studio 100 then started to expand outside of Belgium. They began making their shows in other languages. They also created new shows like Bumba.
A big step in their international growth happened in 2008. They launched a Belgian TV channel called Studio 100 TV. They also created Studio 100 Media in Germany. This part of the company helped sell their shows to other countries.
Over the next few years, Studio 100 updated old classic shows they had bought. They also launched new channels. These included a cooking channel called Njam! in Belgium in 2010. They also launched BeJunior in the Middle East and North Africa in 2016.
In 2008, Studio 100 bought EM.Entertainment. This company owned many classic shows like Maya the Bee and Vic the Viking. This purchase also included an Australian animation studio called Flying Bark Productions. It also gave Studio 100 a German TV channel, JuniorTV. This was Studio 100's first TV channel outside Belgium.
In 2009, Studio 100 opened its own animation studio in Paris, France. It was named Studio 100 Animation. This studio creates new versions of classic shows like Maya the Bee and Vic the Viking. They also make new original shows.
Expanding into Movies and Digital
In 2013, Studio 100 started making movies. They launched a new film division called Studio 100 Film. Their first movie was Maya the Bee: The Movie.
In 2014, Studio 100 created a new digital entertainment division. This part of the company helps release their shows on online platforms.
In 2017, Studio 100 bought a large part of Made 4 Entertainment (m4e AG). This company produced Mia and Me. This made Studio 100 one of the biggest kids' entertainment companies in Europe.
Studio 100 also expanded into the United States in 2017. They bought a New York-based animation studio called Little Airplane Productions. This gave them another animation studio to create new projects.
In 2018, Studio 100 took full control of the Mia and Me series. They planned to make the show even bigger. They also launched a new animation studio in Munich, Germany, called Studio Isar Animation. This studio focuses on making computer-animated movies.
Theme Parks and Recent Changes
The theme park division, Plopsa, has also grown a lot. After taking full control of Plopsaland in 2005, they opened new theme parks in different cities. These include Hasselt (2005) and Dalen (2010). They also opened water parks in De Panne (2015) and Hannuit-Landen (2020). Plopsa plans to open more parks in several countries.
In 2020, Studio 100's animation studio Flying Bark Productions opened a second studio in Los Angeles.
In 2023, Studio 100 bought a part of a Spanish animation studio called 3 Doubles Producciones. This helps them make and share more animated films and series.
In March 2024, Studio 100 changed its look and name for its global distribution division. Studio 100 Media became "Studio 100 International."
