Success Lake is a large reservoir (a human-made lake for storing water) located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It sits about 46 feet above sea level. This lake is part of the 435-acre Lake Success Business Park. This area was once known as "Remington Woods." From 1905 to 1989, a company called Remington Arms Company used this land for manufacturing.

Exploring Success Lake's Geography

Success Lake is divided into two main parts: a northern section and a southern section. The southern part of the lake is about 17 acres in size. It is also around 10 feet deep.

How Deep is the Lake?

The northern part of the lake is smaller, covering about 6 acres. Its depth varies, ranging from 3 to 6 feet. The bottom of the lake is not flat or even.

Where Does the Water Go?

Water flows out of Success Lake through the Yellow Mill Channel. This channel is also known as Yellow Mill Creek. It eventually empties into Bridgeport Harbor.

A Look at Success Lake's History

The lake itself was created a long time ago, in 1875. This is when the first dam was built to form the reservoir.

Early Studies of the Lake

Scientists from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) studied Success Lake in September 1979. The United States Army Corps of Engineers also looked at the lake in 1981. Their report mentioned that the lake's main purpose was to help put out fires.

Efforts to Clean Up the Area

A company called DuPont spent a lot of money and time cleaning up a nearby part of the site in Stratford, Connecticut. However, as of 2013, the lake and its surrounding land had not yet been cleaned.

Recent Discoveries and Plans

The lake was checked again in the spring of 2014. This study found that some old materials were placed in several spots in the northern part of the lake. By 2015, plans to develop the land around the lake were moving slowly. A group that works with the Sierra Club is trying to protect the lake and its land. They want it to remain an open, natural space for everyone to enjoy.

Wildlife Around Success Lake

The lake is known for having a type of fish called alligator gar. These fish are usually found in different areas. The lake's water has some pollution, including mercury and lead. It also gets runoff from storms.

Animals Living Near the Lake

The area around Success Lake is home to many local animals. These include white-tailed deer. However, there are no animal species living here that are considered rare or endangered.
