Sudha Shivpuri (born July 14, 1937, died May 20, 2015) was a famous Indian actress. Many people knew her best for playing the role of 'Baa' (which means 'mother' or 'grandmother' in some Indian languages) in the popular Hindi TV show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi from 2000 to 2008.

Sudha Shivpuri's Early Life and Career

Sudha Shivpuri grew up in Rajasthan, India. She started her acting career at a very young age, even while she was still in the eighth grade. Her father had passed away, and her mother became ill. Because of this, Sudha had to start working to support her family.

Learning to Act: School and Theatre

Sudha Shivpuri studied at the National School of Drama, which is a famous acting school in India. She graduated in 1963. There, she met Om Shivpuri, who was also an actor. They got married in 1968 and continued to work in theatre in Delhi.

Together, they started their own theatre group called Dishantar. This group put on many important plays of their time. Some of these plays included Aadhe Adhurey, Tughlaq, and Khamosh! Adalat Jari Hai. Sudha Shivpuri played the main role in Khamosh! Adalat Jari Hai, and her husband, Om Shivpuri, directed all these plays.

Moving to Films and Television

In 1974, Sudha Shivpuri moved to Mumbai. This was because her husband, Om Shivpuri, started getting many offers to act in Hindi films.

Sudha Shivpuri made her first film appearance in 1977 in a movie called Swami. After that, she acted in several other films. Some of her well-known movies include Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Hamari Bahu Alka, Sawan Ko Aane Do, The Burning Train, Vidhaata, and Maya Memsaab (1993).

After a while, she took a break from films and started working in television. She appeared in TV shows like Aa Bail Mujhe Maar and Rajni (1985). In Rajni, she played the role of the mother-in-law.

Becoming 'Baa': A Big Break

After her husband passed away in 1990, Sudha Shivpuri began acting more often. She appeared in many TV shows such as Missing, Rishtey, Sarhadein, and Bandhan.

Her biggest role on television came in 2000. She was asked to play 'Baa', the wise old mother-in-law, in the TV show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. This role made her very famous, and many people started to know her as 'Baa'.

She also acted in other TV shows like Sheeshe Ka Ghar, Waqt Ka Dariya, Daman, Santoshi Ma, Yeh Ghar, Kasamh Se, and Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil. In all these shows, her 'Baa' character was very popular.

In 2003, she acted in the Hindi film Pinjar. This movie was based on a famous novel about the Partition of India, a time when India was divided into two countries.

Awards and Recognition

Sudha Shivpuri was a very talented actress. In 2009, she received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. This award is given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, which is India's national academy for music, dance, and drama. It is a very important award for artists in India.

Sudha Shivpuri's Family Life

Sudha Shivpuri was married to the well-known actor Om Shivpuri. They had two children together: a son named Vineet Shivpuri and a daughter named Ritu Shivpuri. Ritu Shivpuri also became an actress, following in her parents' footsteps.

Sudha Shivpuri had some health problems in 2014. She passed away in Mumbai on May 20, 2015, due to health issues.
