Suffolk Coastal was a special area in Suffolk, England, that had its own local government. This government body, called a council, helped manage the area. Its main office was in Melton, but before 2017, it was in nearby Woodbridge. Other important towns in the Suffolk Coastal area included Felixstowe, Framlingham, Leiston, Aldeburgh, and Saxmundham.

What Was Suffolk Coastal?

Suffolk Coastal was a type of area known as a "non-metropolitan district." This means it was a local government area that was not part of a large city or metropolitan area. It had its own council that made decisions about local services and issues for the people living there.

When Was Suffolk Coastal Formed?

The Suffolk Coastal district was created on April 1, 1974. This happened because of a law called the Local Government Act 1972. This law brought together several smaller towns and rural areas to form larger, more efficient districts.

Which Areas Joined to Form Suffolk Coastal?

When it was formed, Suffolk Coastal combined several existing areas. These included the towns of Aldeburgh, Felixstowe, Leiston-cum-Sizewell, Saxmundham, and Woodbridge. It also included two larger rural areas called Blyth Rural District and Deben Rural District. By 2011, about 124,298 people lived in the Suffolk Coastal district.

What Happened to Suffolk Coastal?

Suffolk Coastal district no longer exists on its own. On April 1, 2019, it joined with another nearby district called Waveney. Together, they formed a new, larger district known as East Suffolk. This change was made to create a bigger, more powerful local government for the eastern part of Suffolk.
