History of Suggsville
How Suggsville Began
Suggsville was planned as a town in 1819. It was built where two important old roads crossed. These roads were the Old Line Road and the Federal Road. The Federal Road was a major route that helped people travel and settle in the area.
The community was named after William Suggs. He was a local store owner who was well-known in the area.
Early Life in Suggsville
Suggsville was once a busy place. The first newspaper in Clarke County, called the Clarke County Post, was printed here. Before the American Civil War, Suggsville had many homes and stores. It also had schools for both boys and girls. These schools were called academies.
However, after the Civil War ended, the town quickly became much smaller. Many people moved away, and businesses closed.

Suggsville is close to where two old forts once stood. These were Fort Glass and Fort Madison. They were built during the Creek War. This was a conflict that happened in the early 1800s. The forts were like strong fences or walls built to protect people.
