History of Sumiton

Sumiton started as a mining town after the American Civil War. It was built around a railroad. The city officially became a city in 1952.

The name "Sumiton" was created in 1926 by Nicholas M. Norris. It comes from the fact that the city is on one of the highest points in Walker County. Before being called Sumiton, the area had other names like Bald Eagle, Commercial, Democrat, and Summit.

The first company to mine in Sumiton was Philip and Moran’s Mining Company. The city's first post office opened in 1924, and the first public school started in 1940.

City Government and Leaders

As of 2023, the mayor of Sumiton is Petey Ellis. The city council members help the mayor run the city. They are Floyd Burton, Jimmy Dodd, Bill Fowler, Micah Harrison, and Ken Russell.
