History of Summerfield
The Summerfield area was first settled around 1769 by Charles Bruce. It was first called Bruce's Crossroads. In February 1781, during the American Revolutionary War, a small fight happened here. American soldiers led by General Henry Lee III fought against British forces. The Americans won, making the British cavalry retreat.
In 1812, a post office opened, and the community changed its name to Summerfield. This name honored a religious speaker named John Summerfield.

Former North Carolina Governor Alexander Martin once lived in Summerfield. His house is no longer standing. It is said that George Washington stayed in this house during the Revolutionary War. Today, there is a historical home on the town square called the Martin House. This house was lived in by the Governor's son and is now owned by the town.
In June 2024, a new law was passed about land in Summerfield. The North Carolina General Assembly voted to remove nearly 1,000 acres from the town's control. This land belongs to a developer who wanted to build new homes. Town officials and local residents did not agree with his plans. This change means the developer might be able to build without the town's permission.
