Sumner was officially started in 1890. This happened when the Omaha and Republican Valley Railway built its tracks to this spot.

The village was named after Charles Sumner. He was a famous senator from Massachusetts. Senator Sumner was known for his strong beliefs against slavery. He worked hard to end it.
