Discovering SunFest: A Festival's Journey
SunFest started way back in 1982. The very first festival lasted for 10 days! It was so big that the organizers had to work for three years to pay off the costs. Because of this, they made the festival shorter, only three days, in 1984.
How SunFest Grew Over Time
In 1986, SunFest started charging a small fee of $2 to get in. By 1992, the festival had grown to last five days. In 2014, the ticket price at the gate was $25. The festival's budget also grew a lot, from $280,000 in 1984 to $2.2 million. The year 1991 saw the biggest crowd ever, with 345,000 people attending! In 2018, the festival went back to being four days long.
Fun Activities at SunFest
Besides the amazing music, SunFest has many other cool things to do, often called "SunFestivities." These can change each year, but some popular ones include:
- The Battle of the Bands, where new music groups compete.
- Floating themed bars (for adults).
- The TGi5k, which is a fun run.
- The Art District, where you can watch artists create live art and see performances.
A favorite part for many visitors is the incredible fireworks show that ends the festival. It's a dazzling display that makes everyone excited for the next SunFest!
Who Organizes SunFest?
SunFest was created in 1982 by a group called SunFest of Palm Beach County Inc. This group is made up of 25 board members, 25 different committees, and more than 80 sponsors.
Supporting Arts and Culture
One important sponsor is the Palm Beach Cultural Council. They help fund SunFest every year. They do this to help promote art and culture in Palm Beach County. Other groups that have helped create the festival include the state of Florida, the Department of State, the Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Arts Council. Thanks to this support, SunFest is a private non-profit organization. This means it uses its money to put on the festival and support the community, not to make a profit.
