Exploring Sunol Valley
Interstate 680 is a major highway that goes right through Sunol Valley. This highway helps people travel to and from the valley. A special building called the Sunol Water Temple is also found here. It's a historic place that looks like an ancient Roman temple. It was built to celebrate clean water for the Bay Area.
Fish Restoration in Alameda Creek
For many years, a type of fish called steelhead used to swim up Alameda Creek into Sunol Valley. These fish are special because they live in the ocean but return to freshwater to lay their eggs. This journey is called an "anadromous" run.
However, a pipeline built by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) blocked their path. Now, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has plans to help these fish. They are working to change the pipeline so steelhead can swim freely again. This will help bring more fish back to the creek.
Sunol Valley Rock Quarry
The Sunol Valley Rock Quarry is a large site in the valley where rocks and soil are dug up. This material is often used to fill in land for new buildings and roads in nearby towns.
Checking Soil Safety
When material is taken from the quarry, scientists check it carefully. They do special tests to make sure the soil is safe for the environment. These tests look for harmful substances like certain heavy metals and asbestos fibers. The good news is that tests have shown the soil from this quarry is very safe. It has very low levels of any harmful materials.
