Discovering the Sunset Mango
The very first 'Sunset' mango tree grew from a seed. It was planted by a person named Frank Adams in his grove in Pine Island, Florida. People thought this new mango was special.
A New Home for a New Mango
Because it seemed so promising, a new 'Sunset' mango tree was planted in 1947. This tree was grown by taking a piece of the original tree and attaching it to another plant. This is called grafting. It was planted at the Sub-Tropical Research Station in Homestead, Florida.
Solving the Mango Family Mystery
For many years, no one knew which mangoes were the parents of 'Sunset'. But in 2005, scientists used special tests to figure it out. They found that 'Sunset' is likely a mix of two other mango types: the 'Haden' mango and the 'Amini' mango.
Where You Can Find Sunset Mangoes Today
The 'Sunset' mango didn't become a huge hit in stores or nurseries. However, it's still very important for scientists. You can find 'Sunset' trees in special collections. These include the USDA's plant collection in Miami, Florida. It's also at the Miami-Dade Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, Florida. These places help keep many different types of plants safe for the future.
A Taste of Fame
In 2010, the 'Sunset' mango got some attention. It was one of the mangoes offered for people to taste. This happened at the International Mango Festival. The festival was held at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.
A Parent to Another Mango
Scientists have also found something else interesting about 'Sunset'. Using DNA tests, they believe 'Sunset' is one of the parents of another popular mango. This other mango is called the 'Maha Chanok' mango.
Don't Get Confused!
Sometimes, people mix up the 'Sunset' mango with another type. This other mango is called 'Ensey Sunset' or 'Indian Sunset'. It came from a different place, Merritt Island, Florida.
What the Sunset Mango Looks Like
The 'Sunset' mango fruit has a nice oval shape. Both the top and bottom are rounded. It usually doesn't have a pointy tip.
Size and Color
Most 'Sunset' mangoes weigh less than one pound when they are ready to eat. The skin is bright yellow. Often, it has a beautiful dark red blush, like a sunset!
Inside the Mango
When you cut open a 'Sunset' mango, you'll see deep yellow flesh. It's very juicy and soft. It also has very little fiber, which makes it smooth to eat. The taste is rich and sweet, with a lovely smell. Inside, it has one seed.
When to Enjoy Them
