Susan Dunklee, born on February 13, 1986, in Newport, Vermont, is a retired American biathlete. Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Susan competed in many major events, including the Olympic Games and World Championships. She is known for being the first American woman to win an individual medal at a Biathlon World Championship.

Susan Dunklee's Early Life and Career

Susan grew up in Barton, Vermont. She started skiing when she was only two years old. By age seven, she was already competing in cross-country skiing races. For high school, she attended St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

College and Introduction to Biathlon

Susan went to Dartmouth College, where she studied ecology. While there, she was part of Dartmouth's 2007 National Championship Ski team. She was also very active in the Dartmouth Outing Club. Before trying biathlon, she was a double All-American in cross-country skiing. This means she was recognized as one of the best college athletes in the sport.

Susan discovered biathlon during her senior year at Dartmouth. She quickly became very good at it. Her best result in a World Cup event was finishing second in a Sprint race in Presque Isle, Maine, in 2016.

Major Achievements in Biathlon

At the 2012 Biathlon World Championships in Ruhpolding, Germany, Susan achieved a fifth-place finish in the individual event. This was a new best for her at a World Championship.

On November 22, 2013, Susan was chosen to be part of the American team for the 2014 Winter Olympics. She competed in three Olympic Games during her career.

Susan comes from a family of skiers. Her father, Stan Dunklee, was a champion cross-country skier in college. He also competed in the 1976 Winter Olympics and 1980 Winter Olympics. Her uncle, Everett Dunklee, competed in cross-country skiing at the 1972 Winter Olympics.

On February 19, 2017, Susan made history at the 2017 Biathlon World Championships in Hochfilzen, Austria. She finished second in the Mass Start race, earning her first World Championship medal. This made her the first American woman to win an individual medal in biathlon at either the Olympics or World Championships. Her amazing performance also helped her become the first woman to qualify for the next U.S. Olympic team.

Susan also qualified to represent the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics. She officially retired from biathlon at the end of the 2021-2022 season.
