Sutton is a small village in the Southern Tablelands area of New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Yass Valley Shire. Sutton is located on the west bank of the Yass River. It is about 17 kilometres south of Gundaroo and close to the Federal Highway, not far from Canberra.
The village has a primary school, an Anglican church called St Peter's, a general store, and an art gallery. There is also a local baker and a volunteer Bush Fire Brigade.

Discovering Sutton's Past
Sutton started as a piece of land set aside for future use. It was first mapped by Robert Hoddle in 1835.
How Sutton Got Its Name
In July 1866, the land was surveyed again by Edward Twynam. He decided to name the area after Joseph Sutton. Joseph Sutton was the first person Twynam saw on the road during his survey. He lived nearby at a place called Woodbury homestead. Joseph Sutton was also related to William Guise, who owned the Bywong Estate.
When Sutton Became Official
The village of Sutton was officially recognized in July 1867. Sutton Public School opened in 1870 as a provisional school. It has been open continuously since 1880. The way the village is laid out has changed a little over the last 150 years. The street names in Sutton honor important people like royalty, government officials, early settlers, and local gold discoveries.
Sutton's Community Today
According to the 2016 census, the Sutton "state suburb" had a population of 1,660 people. This number includes the village and its surrounding areas. The average age of people living in Sutton was 44 years old.
