Swing (seat) facts for kids
A swing is a fun hanging seat that moves back and forth. You usually find swings in playgrounds where children play. Swings can also be used by acrobats in a circus, hanging high up in the tent. Some garden chairs are also designed to swing gently.
How a Swing Works
A swing's seat hangs from chains or ropes. When you sit on it, you push off the ground with your feet. This makes the swing start to move back and forth. To go higher, you can pull the ropes as you go forward and push as you go backward. You also straighten your legs as the swing goes up. Once a swing is moving, it keeps swinging like a pendulum until it slows down and stops. This back-and-forth motion is called oscillating.
Types of Swings
In playgrounds, you might see different kinds of swings. Some are made for very young children. These "baby swings" have safety bars and holes for legs to keep little ones safe. Parents often push these swings.
Playgrounds usually have soft ground under the swings. This helps prevent injuries if someone accidentally falls off. Often, several swings hang from one long metal or wooden frame.
Many kids also have swings in their own gardens or backyards. A simple swing can be made by hanging a tire (or tyre) from a tree branch with a rope.
