Nawab Syed Hussain Bilgrami (1844-1926) was a very important person in India. He worked for the government, was a politician, and cared a lot about education. He was also an early leader of the All-India Muslim League, a political group that worked for the rights of Muslims in India.

Early Life and Family

Syed Hussain Bilgrami was born in 1844 in a place called Gaya. He went to college at Presidency College in Calcutta. In 1864, he got married. He had four sons and one daughter.

His Career and Important Roles

Syed Hussain Bilgrami started his career as a professor. From 1866 to 1873, he taught Arabic at Canning College in Lucknow.

After that, he began working for the Nizam of Hyderabad, who was a powerful ruler. He became the Private Secretary to Sir Salar Jung, another important leader. During this time, Sir Hussain Bilgrami traveled to England with Sir Salar Jung. There, he had the special chance to meet and talk with Queen Victoria! He also met other famous people like Disraeli and Gladstone.

Later, he continued to work for the Nizam of Hyderabad in different roles. From 1887 to 1902, he was the Director of Public Instruction. This meant he was in charge of education for a large area. He also became a member of the Imperial Legislative Council and the Secretary of State's Council. These were important groups that helped make laws and decisions for India. He stopped working for the Nizam in 1907 because he was not well.

Making a Difference in Education

One of Syed Hussain Bilgrami's biggest achievements was his work in education. He helped start a college that later became Nizam College. This college is still important today.

He also helped create the "All-India Muslim League." This group was formed to protect the rights of Muslims in the Indian subcontinent.

In 1885, he founded a high school just for girls. This was a very new and important idea for India at that time. He also helped set up three special schools to teach people skills for different industries. These schools helped bring back old crafts and businesses in places like Aurangabad, Hyderabad, and Warangal. He even started the State Library, which is a place where people can go to read and learn.

For all his hard work, he received several special titles. These included Nawab Ali Yar Khan Bahadur and Imad-ul-Mulk. He also received the CSI award from the British government for his services.
