Sylvania Waters is a suburb in southern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It's about 21 kilometres (13 miles) south of Sydney's city center. This area is part of the Sutherland Shire.

History of Sylvania Waters

How Sylvania Got Its Name

Long ago, a politician named Thomas Holt owned a lot of land here. This land stretched from Sutherland all the way to Cronulla. In 1818, he built a house called Sutherland House near Gwawley Bay. The area was named Sylvania because it had many trees. The word "Sylvania" comes from a Latin word meaning "forest land."

Early Days and Growth

In 1881, Thomas Holt started a company called the Sutherland Estate Company. A small village began to grow in the area. A post office opened in 1883, and a school started in 1884. The school closed for a while but reopened in 1925. Later, Sylvania Heights Public School opened in 1955.

Building Sylvania Waters Estate

The Sylvania Waters Estate was built in the 1960s by a company called LJ Hooker. To create more land for houses, they filled in parts of the bay. This process, called land reclamation, changed the natural environment. It helped create many waterfront homes with places for boats. James Goyen was chosen to design the estate and build the houses. The streets in Sylvania Waters are named after famous Australian rivers, like Shoalhaven and Hawkesbury. This was done to show the area's connection to water.

Shopping and Services

Sylvania Waters is mostly a place where people live. However, it does have a few small shopping areas. You can find these on Belgrave Esplanade. There's the Sylvania Shopping Village, the Sylvania Shopping Centre, and the Richmond Centre. Doltone House is also in the area. It's a large venue used for events and parties.

Sports and Activities

Sylvania Waters has great facilities for sports. The Sylvania Waters Athletics Track is a modern place for running and other track events. Many local and state competitions are held here. Right next to it, you'll find the Sylvania Waters Tennis Court Complex. It's also the home ground for the Southern Districts Rugby Club, where rugby games are played.

Sylvania Waters in Pop Culture

Sylvania Waters became famous in 1992 because of a reality television show. The show, also called Sylvania Waters, followed the lives of a family living in the suburb. It was shown across Australia and then in other countries.

One of the man-made islands in Sylvania Waters, called James Cook Island, was used in a big movie. It was a filming location for the 2006 movie Superman Returns. In the movie, it was where Lois Lane's house was located.
