History of Täby Church
Täby Church was built a very long time ago, in the late 1200s. It started as a simple square building.
Changes Over Time
Around the mid-1300s, a special room called a vestry was added. This room is often used by priests to prepare for services. About 100 years later, a church porch was built at the entrance.
In the late 1400s, the flat wooden ceiling was replaced with a beautiful vaulted ceiling. This type of ceiling has arches that support it. The altarpiece, which is a decorated screen behind the altar, was also added around the 1470s. You can also see an old runestone built into the wall of the church porch.
Amazing Wall Paintings
The church is decorated with incredible mural paintings by Albertus Pictor. He was one of Sweden's most important painters from the Middle Ages. He passed away in 1511.
Pictor's Famous Art
Pictor's ceiling paintings were made in the 1480s. Unlike many of his other artworks, these paintings were never covered up with white paint. One very famous painting shows a man playing chess with Death. This unique image inspired a well-known scene in the movie The Seventh Seal. This painting is very rare; it's only known from one other place.
The main ideas for these paintings came from a book called Biblia Pauperum. This book was a collection of stories and events from the Holy Bible. The church and its paintings were carefully cleaned and repaired in 1994.
Church Furnishings
The altarpiece from the 1470s shows the scene of Golgotha, which is where Jesus was crucified. On either side of it, there is a sculpture of St. Olof.
The Pulpit
The pulpit, which is where the priest stands to give sermons, was made in the 1630s. It was originally located in a chapel at the old Castle of Stockholm.
