Tahltan is a special place in northern British Columbia, Canada. It's also known as Goon-da-chagga or Goon-tdar-shaga. These names mean "where the spring water stops" in the Tahltan language.

Tahltan is a small community and an Indian reserve for the Tahltan people. It's located east of Telegraph Creek. This area is close to where the Stikine River meets the Tahltan River.

About the Tahltan Community

The Tahltan people are a First Nations group. They have lived in this area for a very long time. Their local government is called the Tahltan Band Council. This council helps manage the community and its lands.

Tahltan Indian Reserves

The main area is known as Tahltan Indian Reserve No. 1. There are also other nearby reserves that the Tahltan Band Council looks after. These include Tahltan Forks Indian Reserve No. 5, Upper Tahltan Indian Reserve No. 4, and Hiusta's Meadow Indian Reserve No. 2. These reserves are important lands for the Tahltan people.

The Land Around Tahltan

Tahltan is surrounded by interesting natural features. The community is overlooked by several flat layers of rock. These rock layers are made of a type of rock called alkali basalt. They were formed a very long time ago, during the Pleistocene era. This was a period that ended about 11,700 years ago.

Volcanic Connections

These rock layers might be connected to a large, flat volcano called Level Mountain. This type of volcano is known as a shield volcano. The top and bottom surfaces of these rock layers have cool patterns. They show well-formed columnar joints. These are natural cracks that make the rock look like tall columns.

What Does Tahltan Mean?

The name "Tahltan" comes from the Tlingit language. It means "something heavy in the water." This name likely refers to the salmon found in the rivers. Salmon are very important fish that swim upstream to lay their eggs. The name of this place was later used to describe the entire Tahltan group of people.
