The Taifa of Lisbon (which means "Kingdom of Lisbon" in Arabic) was a small Islamic kingdom that existed in the Middle Ages. It was located in a part of the Iberian Peninsula called Al-Andalus, which was ruled by Moors (Muslims from North Africa and the Middle East). This kingdom was in the area of what is now Lisbon, Portugal.

The Taifa of Lisbon was ruled by a group called the Banu Khazraj tribe. It lasted from 1022 to 1094, though its rulers changed over time.

Understanding Taifas

What Was a Taifa?

A Taifa was a small, independent Muslim kingdom. These kingdoms appeared in the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) after the big Caliphate of Córdoba empire broke apart. Think of it like a large country splitting into many smaller states. Each Taifa had its own ruler, often called an Emir.

Where Was Lisbon's Taifa?

The Taifa of Lisbon was in the western part of Al-Andalus. This region was known as Gharb Al-Andalus. It included the city of Lisbon, which was then called Lishbuna.

Rulers of Lisbon's Taifa

Banu Sabur Family

The first rulers of the Taifa of Lisbon belonged to the Banu Sabur family. They were a part of the larger Arabian tribe called Banu Khazraj.

  • Abd al-Aziz ibn Sabur (ruled around 1022 to 1030)
  • Abd al-Malik ibn Sabur (ruled around 1030 to 1034)

These rulers were known as Emirs. An Emir was a type of prince or commander in Islamic countries.

History of the Taifa of Lisbon

The Taifa of Lisbon did not last very long as an independent kingdom. Its history involved several changes in who controlled the city.

Early Years and Conquest

The Taifa of Lisbon was independent until 1034. In that year, a stronger kingdom called the Taifa of Badajoz (ruled by the Aftasids) took control of Lishbuna.

Changing Hands

After being taken by Badajoz, Lisbon changed hands several times:

  • 1034–1093: The city was controlled by the Aftasids.
  • 1093: The Kingdom of León, a Christian kingdom, briefly captured Lishbuna.
  • 1094–1141: The Almoravid dynasty, a powerful Muslim empire from North Africa, took control of the city.
  • 1141–1147: As the Almoravid kingdom became weaker, a local group called the Wazirids became independent and ruled Lisbon. This time was part of what historians call the "Second Taifa Period."
  • 1147: The Kingdom of Portugal, a Christian kingdom, attacked Lisbon. After a long siege (a military blockade), the city was captured in October 1147. This event marked the end of Muslim rule in central Portugal.
