Taka Hirose's Journey
Early Life and Music
Taka started playing the bass guitar when he was 14 years old. This was during his time in secondary school. He played in different types of bands back then. These included jazz and metal groups.
After finishing school, Taka moved to Tokyo. He worked for a company called ESP. They are famous for making guitars. At night, he also worked at a bar in the city.
Moving to London and Joining Feeder
In 1992, Taka decided to move to London, England. He went there to study graphic design. He also wanted to keep playing music. He saw an advertisement in a local magazine called Loot. Two musicians, Grant Nicholas and Jon Lee, were looking for a bass player. They wanted to start a new band.
A few days later, Taka met Jon Lee at Camden Station. They went to Grant Nicholas's house. This is where the band, which would later be known as Feeder, officially began.
Feeder's Rise to Fame
As Feeder started to become more popular, Taka thought about quitting. He had only planned for music to be a hobby. He didn't want to leave his job at a newspaper office. But Grant and Jon convinced him to stay. With support from his wife, Taka decided to become a full-time musician.
Feeder gained a lot of praise for their first release, Swim. Their first full album, Polythene, was also very successful. The band then had a big breakthrough. Their next album, Yesterday Went Too Soon, reached the Top Ten in the music charts.
Continuing with Feeder
Sadly, Jon Lee, the drummer, passed away in 2002. Taka returned to Japan to be with his family and friends. After some time, Taka and Grant Nicholas decided to keep the band going. They started working on their fourth album, Comfort in Sound. Mark Richardson joined as their new drummer.
Their next album, Pushing The Senses, also did very well. Both albums reached the top 10 in the UK albums chart. In 2006, they released a collection of their singles, which was also popular. Later albums like Silent Cry (2008) and Renegades (2010) continued their musical journey. Karl Brazil became the drummer after Mark Richardson went back to his band Skunk Anansie.
Other Musical Projects
Besides his work with Feeder, Taka also creates electronic music on his own. He often plays all the instruments himself. He uses the name "Funkybottom" for these recordings. He has also remixed some Feeder songs. One example is "Tracing Lines." He also remixed "Free Your Mind," a short song that didn't make it onto the Silent Cry album.
In 2011, Taka played on a song called "Hide and Seek" by Inoran. In June 2012, Taka teamed up with Inoran again. They also joined with Dean Tidey, who is Feeder's support guitarist. Together, they formed a new band called Muddy Apes.
Awards and Hobbies
As a member of Feeder, Taka Hirose was honored. He was inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame on August 9, 2019. This is a special award for rock musicians.
Taka also has a website where he shares many Japanese food recipes.
