Takahagi (高萩市, Takahagi-shi) is a city located in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. As of July 2020, about 27,522 people lived there in 11,651 homes. The city covers an area of 193.58 square kilometers. Takahagi is known for its beautiful natural areas, including the Pacific Ocean coast and nearby mountains.

Takahagi is in the northern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. It has the Pacific Ocean to its east. To the northwest, it shares a border with Fukushima Prefecture.

Takahagi's Climate

History of Takahagi

Long ago, during the Edo period in Japan, Takahagi was a castle town. It was part of the Matsuoka Domain, which was a local area ruled by a powerful family called the Nakamura clan.

After the Meiji Restoration in 1889, Japan created a new system for towns and villages. At that time, Matsubara town and several villages like Matsuoka were formed. Matsuoka became a town in 1928. Matsubara was later renamed Takahagi in 1937.

Takahagi officially became a city on November 23, 1954. This happened when it merged with the towns of Matsubara, Takaoka, and Kurosaki. In 2011, the city was greatly affected by a large earthquake and tsunami.

Takahagi's Economy

In the past, Takahagi was known for its coal fields. However, these mines ran out of coal by the 1960s. Today, Takahagi's economy mainly focuses on making things (light manufacturing) and processing food. Farming and fishing are also important, but they are smaller parts of the economy.

Takahagi has several schools for children and teenagers. The city government runs four public elementary schools and three public middle schools. There are also two public high schools managed by the Ibaraki Prefecture. In addition, Takahagi has one private high school.
