Talagang (Urdu: تلہ گنگ) is a District of Mianwali Division. It is a city of Punjab, Pakistan. Talagang is commonly known as land of Gazi and Martyrs. It was declared as District on 14th October, 2022 by Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi on the request of former Provincial Minister and MPA Hafiz Ammar Yasir.
Location
Talagang is 45 km from Chakwal. The motorway is located 30 km from M2. It is located at a distance of 237 km from Lahore, the capital of Punjab. While the capital of Pakistan is located about 112 km from Islamabad, Talagang remains a traffic hub as it is located on Islamabad-Karachi national highway. However, with the functioning Rawalpindi-Mianwali CPEC Section the traffic flow has considerably reduced, consequently having a bad impact on economic activities. Hopefully, the district status may reboot its economy.
History
Old name of Talagang was Awan Mahal. This name was given to honour Awan tribe. The Awan believe themselves to be the descendants of Ali ibn Abu Talib and that gives them "high status in the Indian Muslim environment". As Christophe Jaffrelot says,
The Awan deserve close attention, because of their historical importance and, above all, because they settled in the west, right up to the edge of Baluchi and Pashtun territory. Legend has it that their origins go back to Imam Ali and his second wife, Hanafiya. Historians describe them as valiant warriors and farmers who imposed their supremacy on the Janjua in part of the Salt Range and established large colonies all along the Indus to Sind, and a densely populated center not far from Lahore.
