Talagang (Punjabi: تلا گنگ; Urdu: تلہ گنگ) is a city in Punjab, Pakistan. It is the main city of the Talagang District.
This city is part of the Potohar Plateau. It is located north of the Salt Range and east of the Kala Chita range. Talagang is known for its many writers and poets. One famous writer, Dr. Satyapal Anand, was born nearby in 1931.
The area mostly relies on farming in dry regions. Talagang is very famous for growing peanuts. It produces the most peanuts in the Potohar region, with about 42,000 acres of land used for this crop. Chakwal is another big peanut-growing area.
The old name for Talagang was Awan Mahal. This name was given to honor the Awan tribe. The Awan people believe they are descendants of Ali ibn Abu Talib. This belief gives them a special place in the Indian Muslim community.
Location and Travel
Talagang is located 45 kilometers (about 28 miles) from Chakwal. The main highway, M2, is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) away.
The city is 237 kilometers (147 miles) from Lahore, which is the capital of Punjab. It is also about 112 kilometers (70 miles) from Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.
Talagang used to be a very busy place for traffic. It is on the national highway that connects Islamabad and Karachi. However, a new road section, the Rawalpindi-Mianwali CPEC Section, has opened. This new road has reduced the amount of traffic going through Talagang. This change has affected the local businesses. People hope that Talagang becoming a district will help its economy grow again.
Important People from Talagang
Lieutenant Malik Mohammed Khan was a very respected person in Talagang. He was the son of Malik Fazal Ellahi Zaildar, who owned a lot of land in Talagang.
After leaving the British Indian Army, Lieutenant Malik Mohammed Khan became a welfare officer. He also received an award called the OBI. He strongly believed that education was important, especially for girls. He helped start the first girls' school in Talagang. He faced a lot of opposition, but he succeeded because of his high standing in the community.
Malik Mohammed Khan was a major landowner and belonged to the Awan tribe. He was good friends with Captain Malik Mihr Khan. Captain Malik Mihr Khan was the father of Malik Nur Khan Awan. Lieutenant Malik Mohammed Khan passed away on July 9, 1969.
