Tal-y-sarn (pronounced Tal-uh-sarn) is a small village in Gwynedd, Wales. It is located in the beautiful Nantlle Valley, an area famous for its slate quarries. Tal-y-sarn is very close to another village called Penygroes.

The village is part of the larger community of Llanllyfni. Some parts of Tal-y-sarn also extend into the area of Llandwrog. In 2011, about 1,930 people lived in the wider area (called a ward), with 1,086 people living right in the village itself.

Famous Writers and Poets

  • The well-known Welsh language poet Robert Williams Parry was born in Tal-y-sarn. You can find a special plaque at his old home on Station Road.
  • Annant was a quarryman and a preacher. He was also a bard, which is a traditional Welsh poet and storyteller.
  • Gwilym R. Jones was another bard and a journalist.
  • Idwal Jones wrote a popular Welsh radio series called SOS, Galw Gari Tryfan.

Important Figures

  • Dame Elan Closs Stephens DBE, born in 1948, is an important Welsh educator. She represents Wales on the BBC Board, which helps run the British Broadcasting Corporation.
  • John Jones, Tal-y-sarn, was a famous preacher in the 1800s. He settled in the village and became a shopkeeper and quarry owner. These jobs were extra to his main work as a preacher.

The "Ciosg Talysarn" Song

The Welsh folk singer Dafydd Iwan wrote a song called "Ciosg Talysarn." This song was inspired by a real event in 1982. Two secret agents were found listening in on calls from a public telephone box in Tal-y-sarn. "Ciosg" means "kiosk" or "booth" in Welsh.

According to the 2021 census, a large number of people in Tal-y-sarn speak Welsh.

  • The 2011 census showed that 70.7% of residents aged 3 and older could speak Welsh. This shows that the Welsh language is still very strong in the village.
