History of Tampico
How Tampico Got Its Name
The community of Tampico was named by an early settler named A. D. Elgin. He was a pioneer cattleman, meaning he was one of the first people to raise cattle in this new area. Mr. Elgin named the place after a town in Mexico called Tampico, where he used to live.
Early Settlers
People started settling in Tampico as early as 1872. By 1887, which was about 15 years later, there were already between 16 and 20 families living in the community. These early settlers helped build the foundations of Tampico.
Important Historical Figures and Places
Chief Kamiakin was a very important leader for the Yakama, Palouse, and Klickitat Native American tribes. He was born in 1800 near Ahtanum Creek, which is close to where Tampico is today. Chief Kamiakin led his people in the Yakima War.
Near the place where Chief Kamiakin was born, a special building called St. Joseph's Mission was built in 1852. A mission is a place where religious services are held and people often work to help the community. This mission was destroyed and rebuilt more than once over the years, but religious services are still held there regularly today.
