Tarrik Brock's Baseball Journey
Starting His Career
Tarrik Brock started his baseball journey when the Detroit Tigers picked him in the second round of the 1991 amateur draft. He was one of the last players from that round to reach the major leagues. After playing for six years in the Tigers' minor league teams, mostly at the A-ball level, the Seattle Mariners chose him in the Rule 5 draft. He played two seasons in the Mariners' minor league system before he was released in January 1999.
Joining the Cubs
On April 8, 1999, Brock signed with the Colorado Rockies. He was sent to their AA team, Carolina. Later, on July 7, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs. This trade was part of an earlier deal made on March 28. The Rockies received two other players, John Cotton and Kevin Rawitzer, in return. Neither of these players made it to the major leagues.
Even though Brock only hit for a .217 batting average in 54 games with the Cubs' AA team, he made the Cubs' major league roster in the spring of 2000.
Major League Debut
Tarrik Brock made his big league debut on March 29, 2000. He played as a left fielder in the Cubs' Opening Day game against the New York Mets. This special game took place in the Tokyo Dome in Japan. He was the first MLB player ever to make his debut in Japan.
In his first time at bat in the major leagues, he faced pitcher Rich Rodriguez. Brock hit a single to right field. On that play, his teammate Sammy Sosa was tagged out at home plate, which ended the inning.
End of Playing Days
Brock stayed with the Cubs until April 22, 2000. He had a tough time, getting only one more hit. This hit was a single off pitcher Vladimir Núñez on April 16. After that, he was sent back to the minor leagues and never played in the major leagues again.
In 2001, Brock played in an independent league called the Northern League and was named an All-Star. He tried to make a comeback in 2002 and 2003 with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, but he couldn't get back to the highest level of baseball. For his entire major league career, Brock hit .167 (which means 2 hits in 12 tries). He also had 4 walks, 4 strikeouts, and stole one base.
