Tasmin Mitchell's College Basketball Career at LSU

LSU started trying to recruit Tasmin Mitchell during his junior year of high school. He decided to play for the LSU Tigers in September 2004. He chose LSU over Kentucky. He wore jersey number 1.

As a first-year student, he was chosen to be a starter by coach John Brady. He played about 34.4 minutes per game. He averaged 11.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. He had three games where he scored double-digits in two different stats (called double-doubles). He was named SEC Freshman of the Week in November 2005. This was after he scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds in his first game. Mitchell played 36 games in his first season, starting all of them. He was named Player of the Game for LSU in the 2006 Final Four game against UCLA. At the end of the season, he was named to the SEC All-Freshman team.

Mitchell was a regular starter for LSU again in his second year. He played about 34.1 minutes per game. He averaged 14.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. He was the second-highest scorer on his team. His third college season ended early after only 3 games. He suffered a shin fracture and ankle injury that needed surgery. He was allowed to take a "medical redshirt" year, meaning he didn't lose a year of eligibility.

After recovering from his injury, Mitchell returned to LSU in 2008. The new coach, Trent Johnson, kept Mitchell in the starting lineup. He moved him to the power forward position. Mitchell was the second-best scorer on his team, averaging 16.3 points per game. He was also the leading rebounder with 7.2 rebounds per game. He shot a career-high 52.2% from the field. On February 11, 2009, he scored 41 points in a double-overtime game. This was the first time an LSU player scored over 40 points since 1995. On February 28, 2009, he scored the winning shot against Kentucky. This made LSU the SEC regular season champion. At the end of the season, he was named to the All-SEC First Team.

Mitchell first said he would enter the 2009 NBA draft. However, he later changed his mind and decided to return to LSU for his fifth and final season. Before the season started, Andy Katz of ESPN.com included Mitchell on his list of possible nominees for the John R. Wooden Award. Mitchell kept his starting role for the fifth year in a row. He led the team in scoring (16.8 points), rebounding (9.4 rebounds), and steals (1.3 steals) per game. On December 14, 2009, he had his career-high for rebounds in a game with 18. On January 20, 2010, Mitchell scored 38 points against Auburn. He led the conference in minutes played per game. At the end of the season, he was named to the All-SEC Second Team.
