History of Taunton
Taunton was officially planned and laid out in 1886 by the railroad company. This means they drew up maps and divided the land into streets and building lots. The city was named after Taunton, Massachusetts, a city far away on the East Coast.
A post office has been helping people send and receive mail in Taunton since 1888. The city officially became an incorporated town in 1900. This means it gained its own local government and could make its own rules.
To celebrate 100 years of important buildings, a special plate was designed in 1986 by Nancy Koch. It was called "Taunton's Hundred Years 1886 - 1986." The plate showed eight famous buildings from Taunton's history:
- The first Public School, built in 1889.
- The Taunton City Hall, where the local government meets.
- The Taunton Fire Station, built in 1907, which helps keep everyone safe.
- Beck's Hardware, a store built in 1903.
- The Taunton State Bank, built in 1905.
- STS Cyril and Methodius Church, built in 1895.
- STS Cyril and Methodius Rectory, built in 1905, which is where the church's priest lives.
- Ray's Standard, a business built in 1927.
- The Co-op Elevator, organized in 1911, which is important for local farming.
