Taylor Jane Schilling (born July 27, 1984) is an American actress. She is famous for playing Piper Chapman in the Netflix comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black (2013–2019). For this role, she was nominated for a top acting award, the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. She also received two Golden Globe Award nominations.
Taylor started her film career in 2007 with the drama Dark Matter. She also played Nurse Veronica Flanagan Callahan in the TV show Mercy (2009–2010). Some of her other movies include Atlas Shrugged: Part I (2011), The Lucky One (2012), Take Me (2017), and the science-fiction thriller The Titan (2018).

Early Life and School
Taylor Schilling was born on July 27, 1984, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her mother, Patricia, worked at MIT. Her father, Robert J. Schilling, was a lawyer. Taylor grew up in West Roxbury and Wayland. She split her time between her parents, who were divorced.
When she was young, Taylor loved the TV show ER. She started acting at a young age. In middle school, she was in the play Fiddler on the Roof.
After finishing Wayland High School in 2002, Taylor went to Fordham University. She studied there and continued to act in stage productions. She earned her degree in 2006. She then went to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts to study acting more. However, she left after her second year. While trying to become an actress, she worked as a nanny in New York City.
Acting Career
First Roles (2007–2012)
Taylor won an award for her acting at the Emerson College Playwright's Festival. Her first movie role was in the independent film Dark Matter (2007). In 2009, she starred in the TV show Mercy. She played a nurse who came home after serving in the Iraq War. The show's creator, Liz Heldens, was very impressed with Taylor. Mercy ran for one season.
The next year, Taylor played the main character, Dagny Taggart, in the movie Atlas Shrugged: Part I (2011). This movie was based on a famous book. In 2012, Taylor starred with Zac Efron in the romantic movie The Lucky One. This movie made a lot of money worldwide. Taylor was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for her role. In 2013, she had a small part in the movie Argo, directed by Ben Affleck.
Orange Is the New Black (2013–2019)
In 2013, Taylor began her most famous role as Piper Chapman in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. This show was based on a real story about a woman in prison. For her work on the show, Taylor was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Primetime Emmy Award. She also won three Satellite Awards and three Screen Actors Guild Awards with the cast. The show finished in 2019.
While working on Orange Is the New Black, Taylor also acted in several movies. She played the lead in the 2013 Canadian film Stay. In 2015, she starred in The Overnight. She also performed in an off-Broadway play called A Month in the Country.
In 2017, Taylor starred in the comedy film Take Me. She also appeared in Phil. She then starred with Emilio Estevez in the drama film The Public (2018). She also appeared in the science fiction thriller The Titan (2018) and the comedy Family (2018). In 2019, Taylor starred in the horror film The Prodigy.
Recent Work (2020–Present)
In 2020, Taylor Schilling appeared in an episode of the horror show Monsterland. The next year, she starred in the science fiction horror series The Bite. In 2022, she was in the Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy. In 2023, she played a main role in the Apple TV+ drama series Dear Edward. She also starred in the horror-thriller movie Queen of Bones.
In 2024, Taylor returned to the stage in a play called The Apiary.
Personal Life
In 2020, Taylor Schilling shared on Instagram that she was dating Emily Ritz. Emily is a musical and visual artist. Taylor also practices Transcendental Meditation. In 2023, Taylor confirmed in a podcast that she and Emily had broken up two years earlier.
