Techno is a type of electronic dance music. It first became popular in Frankfurt, Germany, in the early 1980s. This music style was inspired by sounds like synthpop, house music, and funk. It also took ideas from futuristic stories that were popular in the United States during the end of the Cold War.
Many people believe Juan Atkins started Techno music. A style called Detroit Techno first became popular in its home city. Then, in the 1990s, it grew famous all around the world.
What is Techno Music?
The word "techno" comes from "technology". Fans of Techno music are very careful about how they use this word. They make sure not to mix it up with other similar music styles. For example, they know it is different from house, trance, or hardcore.
However, the word "techno" is often used more widely. In places like Europe, the Americas, and Australia, people sometimes use "techno" to talk about all kinds of electronic music and dance music. Even so, true techno is a special type of music with its own clear sound.
The Sound of Techno
Techno music often sounds very repetitive. It usually focuses on instruments rather than singing. It follows a steady "four-on-the-floor" beat. This means the main beat is played on every quarter note.
The rhythm is very important in techno music. The sound of techno is strongly based on its beat. This makes it great for dancing.
