Edward "Ted" Burgin (born 29 April 1927, died 26 March 2019) was a famous English football player. He was a goalkeeper and played in 551 games in the Football League. Ted played for several teams, including Sheffield United, Doncaster Rovers, Leeds United, and Rochdale. He also played twice for the England B team. Ted was even part of the England squad for the 1954 World Cup, though he didn't play in any matches.

Ted Burgin's Football Journey

Ted Burgin started his football career with a team called Alford Town. He was a talented player.

Joining Sheffield United

In March 1949, after a successful tryout, Ted joined Sheffield United. He made his first appearance for the team on 1 September 1949. This was a Second Division game against Swansea Town. Even though he was not very tall for a goalkeeper, standing at 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m), his amazing quickness and skill helped him stay in the team for almost eight years.

Key Seasons and Appearances

Ted was a very reliable player. He played in every single league game for three seasons: 1950–51, 1952–53, and 1953–54. From November 1949 to March 1952, he played in 102 league games in a row! Overall, he played 314 games for Sheffield United. This included 281 league matches and 20 FA Cup games.

Moving to Other Clubs

After his time at Sheffield United, Ted moved to Doncaster Rovers. He was bought for £3,000. He was meant to replace another famous goalkeeper, Harry Gregg. Sadly, after only five games, Ted broke his collarbone.

Playing for Leeds and Rochdale

In 1958, Ted joined Leeds United. He played in 58 league games for this West Yorkshire team. In 1960, he moved to Rochdale. He spent six seasons there, playing in 207 league matches. He even played in the important 1962 Football League Cup Final. Later in his career, Ted became a player-manager for Glossop. This meant he played and helped manage the team at the same time.

Ted's International Recognition

During his time with Sheffield United, many people thought Ted Burgin was one of the best goalkeepers in England.

Representing England

In 1951, he went on a tour of Australia with the Football Association's team. He was also a reserve player for the England team in a match against Austria in 1951. In 1954, he earned two caps (meaning he played in two official matches) for the England B team. He was also chosen to be part of the England squad for the 1954 World Cup. Even though he didn't play in any of the World Cup matches, being selected was a big honor!
