Tejas: A Look at Its History
How Tejas Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to belong to Spain. After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
After this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a place controlled by the U.S. government but is not a state.
Counting the People in Tejas
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 704 people lived in the Tejas barrio at that time.
