Telde is a city and a municipality located on the eastern side of Gran Canaria island. This island is part of the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain. Telde is very close to Las Palmas and is part of its larger city area.
It is the second largest city on Gran Canaria, with over 123,000 people living there in 2018. The city covers an area of about 102 square kilometers. Telde is special because it is the oldest city on the island and was its first capital. It was founded a long time ago, even before 1351. The main highway, GC-1, runs near the city. Also, Gran Canaria International Airport is located in an area called Gando, just south of Telde.

Discovering Telde's Past
Before the Spanish arrived, Telde was an important center for the native people of Gran Canaria. A famous native leader named Doramas is thought to have lived here. Records from that time suggest there were about 14,000 native homes in Telde when the Spanish came. The famous Idolo de Tara figure, which is now in the Museo Canario in Las Palmas, was found in Telde.
Telde was officially created by a special order from the Pope in 1351. Today, it is Gran Canaria's second-largest city. Many visitors enjoy exploring the historic old town of Telde.
Telde's Church History
A long time ago, in 1351, a special church area called the Diocese of Islas de la Fortuna was created for the Canary Islands. It was later renamed the Diocese of Telde in 1369, after the city itself. This area was important for the Catholic Church in the region for many years.
Today, Telde is recognized as a Titular bishopric. This means it's a historical church area that no longer has a resident bishop, but its name is used for special church leaders who work in other roles, like ambassadors for the Pope.
Telde's Economy and Jobs
In the past, Telde was mostly a farming community. People grew crops like sugar cane, grapes, bananas, and tomatoes. But today, the area around Telde has many factories and businesses. It has become an important industrial center for the island.
Two airlines, Binter Canarias and Canaryfly, have their main offices at Gran Canaria Airport, which is near Telde.
Exploring Telde's Main Sights
The San Juan Bautista church (Saint John the Baptist) is a very important spiritual place in Telde. It was built in 1483 by the Garcia del Castillo family when the town was founded. The church still has its original entrance, which shows a mix of Spanish and Portuguese Gothic styles. The tall towers were added later, in the early 1900s, in a neo-Gothic style.
Inside the church, you can see some amazing things:
- A statue of Christ on the main altar, made from corn dough by Mexican Purépecha people before 1550.
- A beautiful Flemish Gothic main altar from before 1516.
- A triptych (a painting with three panels) of the Virgin Mary from Flanders, also from the 16th century, showing five religious scenes.
Telde is also home to many ancient sites. There are 101 archaeological sites and 709 places of historical interest. While many are not well-preserved, some are very impressive:
- The coastal town of Tufia, which is well-preserved and has been studied by archaeologists.
- Four Doors (Cuatro Puertas), a large cave with four entrances on top of a mountain. It overlooks a plain and is connected to a village of cave houses.
- The caves of Tara and Cendro, which are remains of ancient settlements.
- The town of Draguillo, located near Ingenio.
- Las cuevas Chalasia, a maze of artificial caves connected by tunnels.
- The amazing necropolis of Jinámar, which has over 500 different types of ancient tombs.
Telde's Weather
Telde has a moderate desert climate. This means it is generally warm and dry.
