Early Life and Family
Teri'imaevarua III was born on May 28, 1871. Her full name was Ari'i-'Otare Teri'i-maeva-rua III Pomare. She was the second daughter of Prince Tamatoa V, who was the King of Ra'iātea and Taha'a. Her mother was Princess Moe-a-Mai.
Becoming Queen
When her aunt, Princess Teari'i-maeva-rua I Pomare, passed away, Ari'i-'Otare became the Queen of Bora Bora. This happened in 1873 when she was just a young child.
Marriage and Adoption
On January 9, 1884, Queen Ari'i-'Otare married Prince Teri'i Hinoi-a-tua Pomare. He was a chief from Hitia'a, a place in Bora Bora. However, they divorced in 1887.
Queen Ari'i-'Otare did not have her own children. So, she adopted her two younger stepdaughters. Their names were Princess Rehu-rehu Tuheiava and Princess Itia Tuheiava.
French Influence and End of Reign
In 1888, the island of Bora Bora became part of France. This process is called annexation. Even though France took control, Queen Ari'i-'Otare still held her royal power for a few more years.
She officially gave up her throne on September 21, 1895. After this, she was no longer the ruling queen. However, she remained the head of the royal family of Bora Bora until she passed away.
Later Years
Queen Teri'imaevarua III lived until November 19, 1932. She died in Papeete, which is located on the island of Tahiti.
