Where is Territet?
Territet is found along the shore of Lake Geneva. It sits between the main part of Montreux town and a small village called Veytaux. This makes it a great location with lovely lake views.
A Look at Territet's History
Territet wasn't always one big place. It used to be a few smaller villages that grew together over time. The lower part, closer to the lake, was always known as Territet. Higher up, there were other small areas called Collonge and La Veraye.
How Tourism Began
The first hotel in this area opened in nearby Veytaux in 1829. Soon after, more hotels started popping up in Territet. One famous hotel, the "Chasseur des Alpes," opened in 1840. It later became the important Hôtel des Alpes-Grand Hôtel.
The main part of Montreux, which is now a busy city center, was once just farmland. This is why famous trains like the Orient Express used to stop at Territet's station instead of Montreux. Tourists started visiting Territet in 1848, and even more came after the train station opened in 1861.
Famous Visitors and Firsts
Many important people visited Territet over the years. Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria came in 1893. His wife, Empress Elisabeth of Austria (also known as Empress Sisi), visited Territet four times on her own.
Territet was also home to some cool "firsts" in Switzerland:
- In 1879, the very first phone in Switzerland was installed here.
- The first tennis court in Switzerland was built in Territet in 1894. It was only for English tourists, no one else!
- The Territet–Glion funicular railway, one of the oldest mountain railways in Switzerland, started running in 1883.
In 1931, a special agreement called the Pact of Territet was signed here. It was an attempt to fix a family problem between two groups of the Spanish royal family, the Borbons, who were living in exile. However, this agreement was never put into action.
Important Buildings and Museums
Territet has several interesting places to visit:

- There's also an Anglican Church called St. John’s Montreux, built between 1875 and 1878.
