Tessenderlo is a town in Belgium. It is located in the Limburg province. This area is special because three Belgian provinces meet here. These are Limburg, Flemish Brabant, and Antwerp. They meet near the Averbode Abbey.
The town of Tessenderlo includes several smaller villages. These are Tessenderlo itself, Schoot, Engsbergen, Hulst, and Berg. In 2006, about 16,811 people lived in Tessenderlo. The total area of the town is about 51.35 square kilometers. This means about 327 people live in each square kilometer.
The name Tessenderlo has an interesting meaning. It means "the open place in the forest of the Taxandrians". This tells us it was once a forest clearing.
Tessenderlo is located next to the Albert Canal. It is also near the European route E313 highway. This highway connects the cities of Antwerp and Liège. Because of its good location, Tessenderlo became important for industry. In the 1960s, it was chosen for Belgium's first "Industrial Zone of National Importance."
A serious industrial accident happened in Tessenderlo during World War II. On April 29, 1942, a chemical plant had an explosion. This event caused many people to lose their lives.
The local language in Tessenderlo is also unique. In this part of Limburg, people speak a Brabantic dialect. This is different from the usual Limburgian dialect spoken in other areas.
